Composed at a time when neither oratorio nor opera yet existed, this Rappresentatione, first performed in February 1600, presents a masterful work of musical drama. The conflict between body and soul - a profoundly symbolic theme of the Counter‑Reformation - calls for soloists, choir, and a richly scored orchestra, whose varied timbres both accompany and characterize the singers. At the dawn of the musical revolution of the Baroque era, singing, stage action, dance, and instrumental music merge here in perfect harmony.
