Piramo e Tisbe

Johann Adolf Hasse

When Johann Adolph Hasse composed Piramo e Tisbe in 1768, he was probably the most frequently performed opera composer of the late Baroque. With this emotionally gripping intermezzo tragico, he ventured musically into a new operatic era.

G.Ph. Telemann

Concerti per molti stromenti

With this CD, the Akademie für Alte Musik Berlin turns its attention to a long‑standing companion - one whose works have accompanied the orchestra since its very beginnings. On the occasion of the 250th anniversary of Telemann’s death (1681-1767), the ensemble celebrates its “composer‑in‑residence” of sorts with this brilliant and ever‑surprising concert programme.

Orfeo[s]: Italian & French Cantatas

with Sunhae Im

For her first solo recital on harmonia mundi, Sunhae Im has chosen four cantatas dedicated to the myth of Orpheus. The Greek poet, who at the end of the Quattrocento played a decisive role in the birth of modern tragedy and, a century later, that of opera, also inspired late Baroque composers such as Alessandro Scarlatti and Giovanni Battista Pergolesi in Italy, as well as Clérambault and Rameau in France.

Emilio de Cavalieri

Rappresentatione di Anima & di Corpo

Composed at a time when neither oratorio nor opera yet existed, this Rappresentatione, first performed in February 1600, presents a masterful work of musical drama. The conflict between body and soul - a profoundly symbolic theme of the Counter‑Reformation - calls for soloists, choir, and a richly scored orchestra, whose varied timbres both accompany and characterize the singers. At the dawn of the musical revolution of the Baroque era, singing, stage action, dance, and instrumental music merge here in perfect harmony.

Magnificat

On 9 April 1786, Carl Philipp Emanuel Bach conducted a benefit concert in Hamburg.
The program featured three of his finest and most representative works: the Symphony Wq 183/1 (1780); the Magnificat, composed in 1749 - presumably in the hope of succeeding his father as Thomaskantor in Leipzig; and, last but not least, the impressive Heilig (1776) for double choir. Of this work he wrote:

“It is intended to be my swan song of this kind, and to serve the purpose that I may not be forgotten too soon after my death.”
