Music for a Royal River Excursion
On July 17, 1717, King George I travelled “up the river to Chelsea, and for his entertainment an excellent instrumental ensemble played … composed for this very purpose by the famous Handel.” The fifty musicians cost the princely sum of £150 - but their French horns, trumpets, flutes, and other instruments delighted the company so greatly that the concert had to be repeated no fewer than three times over the course of the evening. There is no doubt that the incomparable virtuosos of the Akademie für Alte Musik Berlin will be able to recreate this feat in their own living room!
